North East Wales was a major producer of iron and steel for nearly 200 years. High quality engineering steels were made at Brymbo until 1990. John Summers & Sons opened in 1896 making galvanized sheets. It expanded to employ over 13,000 in the 1960s but steelmaking ended in 1979.
