Denbigh Castle and Town Walls form one of the finest medieval monuments in Wales and although less well-known and publicised than the contemporary castles of Edward I, the impressive and in several cases unique buildings are of equal interest in spite of their ruined state.
Over the last decade small scale archaeological investigations by Cadw alongside conservation, safety and access works, and larger excavations ahead of the construction of the present visitor centre in 2011 have shed new light on the layout and development of the site, but raise just as many questions. Will Davies Cadw’s inspector of ancient monuments and archaeology for eastern Wales takes a fresh look at his favourite castle.
